Beginning his career as an outlaw to the Nashville establishment, Johnny Cash has come to define country music over the last 40 years. At first, his unique mix of hillbilly music with gospel and blues made him a perfect fit at Sam Phillips' Sun records, where he recorded such classics as "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk The Line."

This was Johnny Cash's first album, recorded 1955-1957, released October 1957. It was also the first LP issued on Sam Phillips' Sun label. Cash had enrolled in a Memphis radio school after his military service, determined to become an announcer. On an impulse, he went into Sun Records Company one day and rather shyly asked Sun Records President Sam Phillips to audition him. Cash was signed to a deal and his music career launched. That was late 1955, and one year later, Cash was named the most promising country and western artist of the year in four separate polls. No one else even at Sun sounded like Cash nor did any other musicians have that wonderful freight train, chick-boom, chick-a-boom sound.
